Maskne (or Mask Acne) occurs when sweat, oil and bacteria are trapped in your skin while wearing a mask, creating the perfect breeding ground for breakouts. This type of acne is different from blemishes caused by hormones or hereditary issues like cystic acne.
Causes
Just like regular acne there is multiple causes: such as not washing your mask often enough, washing it with harsh detergent, your mask itself and the materials it’s made of & how frequently you wear it. These aren’t the only causes of maskne. Bacteria thrives in humid environments! And we all know too well how humid it can get under there, real quick!
What kind of mask should I wear?!
We recommend using a 100% cotton mask. It’s a great compromise because it allows your skin to breathe a bit! As the temperature rises and you sweat more, you’ll need to keep the mask clean, so wash it daily! You don’t want all the sweat, oil and dirt sitting in your mask and be constantly reapplying it to your face! YIKES. That’s a no-no and not Ozstrayan Skin approved!
Make-up?!
This is the time to give your skin a nice rest from makeup. If you really can’t part with it, we recommend using a tinted moisturiser. If you do need to wear make-up for a zoom meeting etc try to remove your makeup straight away.
We recommend
The Ozstrayan Skin products – “Crickey! She’s Cactus!” Gel Cleanser for Oily Skin paired with “You Little Ripper!” Moisturiser. Why? Not only does it have active ingredients such as Petitgrain, Aloe Vera, Sea Buckthorn Berry, Lactobacillus that help control acne due to their anti-bacterial properties, but it also helps moderate oil production! You Beauty!
